#RPGaDay2024 Day 7 – Forgotten City

Day 7 #RPGaDay2024, I continue with the alternative prompt challenge list by Skala Wyzwania. For more information, see David Chapman’s Autocratik blog post for RPG a Day 2024.

The RPG challenge theme for today is Forgotten City. Roll a 1d10 for the quest. (Let it not be 10 again!) The result is 5. Write a legend or a rumor. Okay, this I can do.

The City of the Dawning Sun

When mortals first crossed the Sea of Mist, after the Burning of the Living Forest and the fall of the Lords of Rock and Soil, a prophet among them led his followers to the land of the Dawning Sun. An island called Majerix, where an ancient city of labyrinthine streets paved in gold that shone splendidly as the sun rose from the great temple at its heart and raced across the sky pulled by the nine flame birds or Carron.

The prophet taught his followers that the High Gods built the city when the world was young and that it once was populated by the Gods and their servants. From there, they shaped the world and created the beasts of the sea and the land, the plants of the earth, the rocks of the mountains, the clouds in the sky, and the people who populated their world.

They prepared their children to shepherd their creation, but the Lower Gods were petty and envious and lacked their parents’ vision. They rebelled, and the Higher Gods banished them to the Land of Dusk. They took their place upon the sky as the Constellations of the High.

These travelers learned the way of the High Gods in this city. Each follower took one of the bricks of the temple of Carron and sailed back to the lands of mortals to teach them the ways of the High Gods. With each brick, they built a temple, took under their wind and auspices the faiths of the Lower Gods, and created the Way of the Divine, bringing prosperity and peace to the mortal races and their allies.

But then the Great Speaker, full of hubris and empty of wisdom, tore down the old temples, gathering all the stones from the City of the Dawning Sun and building a great altar with them. The altar was destroyed, the Constellations broken, the world descended into chaos, the paths to the worlds beyond lost, the words of the High silenced.

But stories say that the City of the Dawning Sun is there, beyond the Sea of Mist, where the prophet waits for mortals to return and return to the ways of the High Gods.

Ok, that’s more like it. It’s a more comfortable quest today. The ideas percolating in these posts certainly inspire a new campaign. I’d love to hear what you think so far.
