Ten Games I Would Take To A Desert Island

In the German roleplaying blog scene people have been posting about the ten RPGs they would take to a desert island. In my opinion that’s a fun thing to do and it provides a good opportunity to talk about our favorite games.

  1. Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 1st Edition
There are two good reasons why I wouldn’t want to miss this game. It’s the first roleplaying game I fell in love with and the core rulebook provides everything you need to run the game – no further supplements needed.
  2. Warrior, Rogue & Mage
    It’s my game. That’s why!
  3. FreeFATE
FATE is among my favorite games and FreeFATE is one of the best versions of the system. It’s free, quite compact and can be used with any genre. I would probably pick the German version, since it looks awesome and is available as a digest-sized softcover book.
  4. Malmsturm
Ok, I already listed FreeFATE, but Malmsturm is definitely one of the best-looking FATE games out there. In addition to that it’s one of the very few German FATE games.
  5. Dungeonslayers
Dungeonslayers is not only a game I contributed to, but it’s definitely one of my favorite fantasy RPGs. Especially when I want to run a game focused on killing monsters and taking their stuff, DS is very high on my list.
  6. Savage Worlds Deluxe
Another easy to learn and fast to play game. In my opinion every gamer should own at least one edition of Savage Worlds and the Savage Worlds Deluxe Explorer’s Edition is the best to date.
  7. Tremulus
I know, I know, it’s not even out yet. But I still think it could become one of my favorite games. I love Lovecraftian horror and tremulus is one of the few games in the genre that can be played with basically no prep.
  8. Swords & Wizardry
In my humble opinion at least one D&D-like game should be on that list and after some consideration I decided to pick S&W. The Lamentations of the Flame Princess boxed set was a close second.
  9. One of the GUMSHOE games
I pretty much own every GUMSHOE game in existence and I love the way the system handles investigations. But alas I can’t decide what my favorite is. Esoterrorists and Fear Itself both share a modern setting and are very compact, Mutant City Blues feels like X-Men meets CSI, Trail of Cthulhu is a very cool game of Lovecraftian horror and Ashen Stars has a very unique space opera setting.
  10. Vampire the Masquerade 20th Anniversary
Vampire was one of the games I played a lot back in the day and it’s still one of my favorite WoD games. I haven’t had the chance to run a proper Vampire campaign yet, so it’s definitely something I need on the desert island!

These are the ten games I would take with me to the desert island? What games would you pick? I invite all of you to either post your picks in the comments below or write a post on your own blog!
